When the Wind Drifts
In high school I was a member of the interesting “aero club”, s student’s club focused on model planes. We virtually made all kinds of things that could fly, like stunt planes, scale planes, tractors, discus launch gliders, helicopters and racing planes. My obsession with aeronautics earned me several national model plane stunt and racing trophies but almost led me to school failure.
After starting my dance studies in college, however, a countless plies replaced flying contraptions. I couldn’t help but smile when I thought of those carefree days when we would ditch class and play our beloved model planes.
My 2014 soujourn in India unexpectedly ignited my interest in studying how human joints operate. From Small End, Small Nanguan-2 to Long River, I’ve been trying to find a rather objective displacement of body, with energy radiating from inside but looking for attributes of vector and diminishing body axis.
In Aerodynamics, I tried to present the diversity of dance movements. Sometimes dancers are still or in slow motion like mist and haze, sometimes haul and hover like birds in the wind; sometimes flow freely like thrusting currents, with all possible permutations and combinations as well as sources of body power. To me this dance is like flying, in a collage of romances and regrets.
I would like to express my gratitude for Macao Arts Festival and the National Performing Arts Centre – National Theatre & Concert Hall, who jointly commissioned this program, and also to dedicate this dance to all the Zhong-zheng Senior High School aero club members, my dear fellows of my teens who still cherish their flying dreams.
